Pretty Boy (1993)
Member Rating:
His single mother has been seeing some men whose presence in the house makes it impossible for thirteen-year old Nick (Christian Tafdrup) to remain. He finds shelter with a man named Ralph (Stig Hoffmeyer), who enjoys him as a sexual boy-toy until his girlfriend comes back from wherever she's been. Nick, living on the streets, does a little hustling to get by until he gets involved with a gang led by Rene (Danish pop star Dicte), a girl posing as a boy. The two even become lovers for a time, but events accelerate and Nick once again confronts his treacherous confidante, Ralph. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

This movie was o.k. it shows life on the streets for this boy. The dvd has had scenes cut from the vhs version, which I don't understand, and personally don't like cut versions, unrated ones at that. The ending is not what you would expect either. It just ends and leaves you hanging, wanting to know more.

I honestly didn't know what to expect from this film, and it surprised me. Hauntingly beautiful and disturbing at the same time, the acting far surpasses the actual story, which is just another runaway story. What young Christen Tafdrup does with the character of Nick, will beguile and amaze you, however. We see naive and almost child-like Nick move quickly from one disturbingly fast relationship to the next, gleaning something from each until, at the end, he has stepped into the realization that he is what he is, and is an adult. It's a film that needs the dialog, so if you're one of those who simply can't deal with foreign language films with subtitles, you want to pass this one up, I think. You have to be able to concentrate on the film, and read the subtitles, but if you do, it's an experience unlike most films these days, a true piece of art that will lend itself well to the "conversation after the movie."

A sympathetic look at a teen run away. But much is left to enuendo, supposition, etc. Good, but really not very original..

I enjoyed this movie. I especially enjoyed drooling over the lead character Nick, who learned quickly how to deal with the Dutch men who craved young teenage boys. He also learned how to navigate the ways of the street gang that dominated the "rent boy" biz. Younger than 14, Nick was dealing, perhaps, the best way he could with a life that offered few options. He was a runaway, but not entirely by choice. It's typical of a European film in the way the narrative plods along and the end, where the story simply stopped in place and then the credits rolled. It's not a nice, neat conclusion. Instead, you're supposed to conjure up in your mind where Nick will be going in his life and what, if anything, it means.

Not sure where this was going with the many contrasts. Mom's no whore, but apparently is having an active sex life. Nick is in the business of deviant activity. Their relationship seems only on getting Nick confirmed. The girlfriend is hot for a 13yr old and cannot decide which gender is her true identity. While interesting, I felt much of the tragedy was done for tragedies sake. Very Europa!

Just have some naked bois in a few scenes with another guy watching-and Whola!!! It's gay art! NOT!! Nothing new-just same ole same ole. Its foreign so the story line is just a boreing narrative and symbolic shots of nothing.

It was just okay. I thought the kid needed more to do, but I guess being a pretty boy is supposed to be enough.

Hey Don B. you wouldn't by any chance be a member of the clergy, would you? For all parents sake I hope there are no young boys living close by!

He really is a pretty boy. Almost too pretty to be a boy. I'd like to see his cock. I understand you did in the VHS version. They sanitized the DVD.
