In this action adventure, author Bernard Cornwell's fictional Major Sharpe is faced with the daunting task of teaching a ceremonial battalion to fight for real. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi
The Sharpe Series, in total, is a hit. This particular movie starts it off and does so with a very good mix of action, romance, and intrigue. Its a classic story of a man in the right place at the right time and accurately depicts the historical events that unfold around it as well as the conditions that the men lived in at the time.
The Sharpe series is like a male romance novel. Equal parts action and romance.
Officer Sharpe is like Captain Kirk: Every episode, each finds beautiful women in unlikely places. Napoleanic battlefields for Sharpe. Uncharted planets for Kirk.
However, Sean Bean's a great actor. The stories move well. It seems historically accurate. Best of all, it's got guns and
horses.
I highly recommend the Sharpe's Movies. It is a good blend of history, action, and romance. I've watched nearly all of the Sharpe's movies now, they are definately worth the time.
This is my second viewing of the Sharpe series. I have also read all the books and suggest everyone do so. Note that the screenplays draw events, characters, and situations from multiple books for each play, and that the series begins after Sharpe has returned from service in the British Army in India, so some of the "motivation" for his attitudes is lost in the plays. This is a "smashing good" series to watch.
It's fun to see the Sharpe books come alive on video -- even though Sean Bean has lighter hair than described for Richard Shape in the novels. The screenplay doesn't follow the book's plot exactly, but the spirit of the novel is very much present.
My wife and I will watch more in this series ("Rifles" being the first of many). However, Bean is a made-for-TV pretty boy. The story wasn't too bad until the end when the true nature of the mission was revealed, and it was made-for-TV goofy. The music was cheesy. We'll see how the series continues, although they're all "long wait" and tough to get.
I enjoyed watching this edition of the Sharpe series. I had read "Sharpe's Eagle" by Bernard Cornwell and had heard some of the TV series programs were available from BB. I am glad I watched it. I will probably rent another. Not sure how historically accurate the skirmishes are but the camaraderie among Sharpe and his men, the conditions thay have to deal with as soldiers is very compelling.
