Enigma Secret (1979) Reviews

Enigma Secret (1979)
Member Rating:
"Project Enigma" was designed to crack the Nazi secret code machine during World War II. Historically, the success of this mission has been attributed to the British. Enigma Secret reveals Poland's role in this crucial turn of events. Three Polish math whizzes pool their skills to break the code, and, incidentally, to stay alive long enough to complete their task. Tadeusz Borowski, Piotr Fronczewski and Piotr Garlicki star in this intelligently constructed, fact-based war story. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

The cryptographic enigma story is as good as it gets with regard to spy thrillers. Two things to keep in mind. If you are looking for today's hollywood type thriller, this will fall somewhat short. I don't think you need explosions and car chases to have thrills. If the Nazis are after you at all times, that is good enough for me. The other thing is that it is in a foreign language which I admit can sometimes be annoying but if it is a good movie, it is very worthwhile. Otherwise, you'd be missing out on so many good ones. This movie puts history straight in that it gives proper credit to the Poles for laying the groundwork for breaking the enigma code. Later, the Brits and Americans did their part. The Brits tend to have a complex in many areas when it comes to wanting to take credit for things in WWII which is unfortunate.

I expected this movie to be a takeoff on the original, which I greatly enjoyed, and I was very surprised to see that it was produced in Polish. Blockbuster should mention this important fact. Steve L

Being someone who enjoys learning about spy stories of WWII I was looking forward to seeing this movie. I was disappointed when I discovered the entire movie was in a foreign language and there was no way to select an English audio track. I did not have time to read it. I'll be looking forward to this being rereleased with an English audio track.

Hard to follow the story line without English sub titles.

Although subtitles in English are offered, I could never get this feature to work - and I don't speak Polish. Having watched programs on code-breaking on the History Channel, I was really looking forward to this movie. Maybe again when subtitles are available...

I really wanted to see this movie. However, no matter what I tried I could not get sub-titles. I don't undestand Polish, so I had to send the disc back without watching it!

I am puzzled by the other reviews. Mine had subtitles and I was able to follow the movie fairly well. The movie also gave credit to the Poles for doing what they could to stop the Nazis. I recommend to anyone curious about that secret typewriter.

As a student of cryptographic history, I know the story of the Polish involvement in the exploitation of the Enigma Secret. I was really looking forward to this movie. It took a long time to get the movie, you can imagine my total consternation when I finally put the movie into my DVD player and discovered that the movie was in Polish...with no subtitles!! I returned it, but the problem reporting system with Blockbuster provides no option for this kind of a situation and nothing in the system tells you that this is a foreign language movie with no subtitles.....a real disappointemnt.
