Love means never having to say that you're ugly in the extravagant fantasy film Enemy Mine. Earthling Dennis Quaid is Davidge, one of many space warriors engaged in a bloody extraterrestrial battle against the Draconians. Crash-landing on a faraway planet, Davidge is forced into an "up close and personal" with the Drac (Lou Gossett Jr.), a repellant, reptilian creature. Evidently a bivalve, the Drac gives birth to a baby Drac just before expiring. Now a reluctant foster father, Davidge tries to keep himself and the baby alive while the war continues to rage all around them. The special effects (courtesy Industrial Light and Magic) are serviceable if not brilliant, and the acting is okay so far as it goes. What socks over Enemy Mine is Rolf Zehetbauer's awe-inspiring production design and Chris Walas' superb makeup work. Though a favorite on home video, the film deserves to be seen on a wide theatre screen. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Set in a future still full of prejudice this movie shows how thinking beings (of any species) can rise above preconceived bias. The two main characters discover they share similar hopes, fears and dreams for the future. Thought provoking plot twists, action and suspense combine to make this a truly memorable film.

This is a powerful movie of two races learning to love and respect each other through very adverse trials.

haven't seen this movie in at least 20 yrs. thought that LGjr.s makeup was pretty impressive, not to mention his acting. Quaid was his usual self, not very good. overall fun movie to watch, special effects still hold up as does the story line. if only people could really put aside their differences, maybe this world would be a better place.

I enjoy this movie its an oldie but a goodie. Also it is a lesson on how prejudice can be changed when you are alone with this individual and no one else around. At the end become forever friends!

Just a few thoughts to whet your whistle. I haven't seen this film for several years, so I'm writing this because of my memory of it. But occasionally I hear mention of it or I see the title someplace and I am moved. This film will stay with you. It offers a very complete life experience. In my opinion, and I realize this conflicts with some very noted critics, the acting is excellent. In fact, it's the acting that makes the film special. Especially the amazingly convincing portrayal of the Drac by Lou Gossett, Jr. I was absolutely convinced that he was a Drac; at first terrible and soon lovable and then admirable. You will learn to miss him deeply. This film goes well beyond mere Sci-Fi. In fact it goes where great Sci-Fi always hopes to go... right back to earth in terms of human lessons learned, life experience, and greater awareness of inner truths. Many many more highly acclaimed and rated films have moved me less than Enemy Mine.

I'm surprised at all the glowing reviews. This was one of the worst movies I've ever seen. A great story line, wonderful makeup on Drac, and interesting scenery. Otherwise . . . not worth watching. And I love the two lead characters.

One of the very best of the best of all time. Brilliant acting and great artistry. Everyone I've talked to LOVED this movie. Food for thought.

A valiant well-acted attempt to get across the positive philosphy of the original story, but it doesn't quite manage to pull it off with the intensity the story deserves. Gossett's makeup looks like it's about to fall off half the time and is quite distracting.
