The End (1978) Reviews

The End (1978)
Member Rating:
At the beginning of The End, Wendell Sonny Lawson (Burt Reynolds) is informed by his doctor that he's dying from "the same thing Ali MacGraw had in Love Story." Lawson's first reaction is to cry uncontrollably, much to the discomfort of his fellow elevator passengers. He heads to a nearby church to confess all his sins, only to be distracted by the wide-eyed fecklessness of the novice priest (Robby Benson). Attempting to resolve a few issues with ex-wife Mary Ellen (Sally Field), daughter Julie (Kristy McNichol), and his parents (Myrna Loy and Pat O'Brien), Lawson finds that they're all too absorbed in their own problems to pay him any attention. At the end of his rope, Lawson decides to kill himself -- with the help of a nutty mental patient (Dom DeLuise). ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

It was a pretty funny movie for 1978 standards. I still laugh when I see it. Worth renting. Love Sally Field, she's a little quirky in this one.

Laughed in 1978 (when I was 15). And laughed harder when I watched it again (at 48). This is a very funny movie - and it's not that tame, there is some language and s*x - but it's not a dumb and dumber type humor. Nothing base or gross. Just absurd situations and great comedy actors doing some of their best work. Enjoy.

They should not have let Burt Reynolds direct. Dom DeLuise and Rob Reiner have the only funny scenes in this flick.

If you can wade through the self-pity & selfishness of Reynold's character, Sally Field's quirkiness and Dom DeLuise are great. DeLuise steals the show & makes it a palatable experience. Good thing he was added to the mix!!

I absolutely loved this movie when it came out in the late 70's but could not get past the first half hour of it now. Dom DeLuise was the absolute best part of it and I could not sit to wait until he came in to the picture to see if it was as funny as I'd rememberd. Some things are best left to the memory and not to be repeated. I had wanted my son to see how funny it was buy luckily he was not here at the time it arrived as it tool three months for me to receive it.

The film suffers from very poor acting and bad direction. However, if you can get past the slow start, you'll find the scenes with Dom DeLuise hilarious and unforgitable.
