Rodriguez does a fantastic job on this low budget film. If you get a chance, watch this before Desperado and Once Upon a Time in Mexico. A trilogy to own! Was this review helpful? Yes

Now that I have seen El Mariachi;Desperado make much more since. Great movie for a "movie buff". Rodriquez is a great director! Quentin Tarantino and him should do more together!! Was this review helpful? Yes

Great action film...less is more. If you intend to watch this movie only once, I suggest that you
first watch the director's comments. This is one case where knowing what's in the sausage makes the
eating more enjoyable. Was this review helpful? Yes

When you watch a Robert Rodriguez (directior) film, you know you're gonna watch something kinda cheesey, and slightly exagerated, but if you can forgive that, you'll be pleasantly entertained. In this flick, his first, which was obviously made on a tight budget, the combination of action, guns, twists, and humor are fantastic. If you liked Desperado, you'll probably like this just as much. El Mariachi is not the blockbuster that Desperado is and the girlfriend is definately no Selma Hayek but I was completely entertained the whole time. Hope you don't mind subtitles. Made with $7k and all of Rodriguez's friends and family who come across as quite normal (as opposed to actors *acting* normal), this movie has a simplicity that Hollywood would never tolerate, but in that simplicity lies its charm. But it's not flat - creative camera work, a good story well told, and funny, too. The subtitling is good, though it would help if you also speak Spanish, because the double entendres don't translate.

Director Robert Rodriguez blasted onto the film scene with his two films, El Mariachi and Desperado. The story of a lone guitarist who is mistaken as a killer that finally brings justice into his own hands. In these two films, we follow the path of this tormented hero, as he travels from town to town seeking is revenge. Both of these films are amazing in their own right. Both contain visually stimulating action, suspenseful drama, and some stylish Sergio Leone homages. While two separate films, each have a very rich blend of every element that pushed Rodriguez ahead of others and ahead of his time. Rodriguez is a genius behind the camera. He is able to give us exactly the right amount of action, drama, and comedy for our liking. He is the proverbial salad bar of cinema. While giving us this deeply rooted character hell-bent on destroying this drug lord, he also lets our imaginations wander with his comical and cartoonish action sequences. Was this review helpful? The low budget beginings of Robert Rodriguez show his stylized action and dialogue that would become classic in his future films. Although the film is flawed and dated, it has to be appreciated for being made on a tiny budget (how this was made with $7,000 I'll never know) and kick starting the career of a very creative writer and director. The film is fun and stylish. Was this review helpful? Yes

This movie, while not the greatest action movie of all time, is really fun to watch and amazing because it was shot for just $7000. The DVD extras of Rodriguez's "10 Minute Film School" and his award winning short "Bedhead" really make it worth renting.
If you're interested, also check out Rodriguez's book "Rebel Without a Crew" that is basically his journal of working on the movie and how he managed to do what he did with so little money. A very inspiring read for wannabe filmmakers. Was this review helpful? Yes
