Clint Eastwood both directed and starred in this thriller based on a novel by Trevanian. Dr. Jonathan Hemlock (Eastwood) is a professor of art history who formerly had a deadly secret life; he was a hired assassin working with an international intelligence organization. Normally content to collect and study art, Hemlock is forced by blackmail to perform one last hit, or, as the organization euphemistically calls it, a "sanction." The victim will be one of three men attempting a dangerous ascent of the Eiger, a beautiful but punishing mountain range in Swiss Alps. While Hemlock is an experienced mountaineer and willing to make the climb, he's troubled to discover that he does not know which of the other three men scaling the Eiger is his true target. The supporting cast includes George Kennedy and Jack Cassidy; the latter earned enthusiastic reviews for his over-the-top performance as a flamboyantly gay secret agent. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Shockingly outdated in political-correctness, a real slow-paced thriller, good twists, keeps you "into" it in a totally different way than 2010/11 movies.

This would be a 1-star movie if it weren't for the absolutely beautiful mountain climbing photography. Aside from this, this is a vacuous and uninteresting film with Clint Eastwood shifting his Dirty Harry mannerisms into secret agency. Oh, he is an art teacher too and possesses a multimillion dollar art collection in the basement of his home. Yeah, right!

Could we all have been so weird in 1975? A so-so movie that doesn't stand up to age very well.

Clint was the original Cliffhanger. I have renewed respect for him. But the cliff climbing and unique idea of an actor doing his own stunts is not enough to save this idiotic movie. Mysogynistic, cliched and predictable (ie had the bad guy figured out when they first met), the film may have been seen as an edgy action movie for the 70's. It's not timeless and seems puerile when compared to other films of a similar genre of the 70's; that is Three Days of the Condor and Marathon Man. In any event, if you are hankering for a Clint Eastwood spy movie with an edge, catch Firefox.

It's a good concept for an espionage movie. However, they take it too extremes on some of the characters. Overall, it's got nice scenery and Clint doing his own stunts. I'd rent it for a sunday matinee if there's nothing else on tv.
