Educating Rita (1983) Reviews

Educating Rita (1983)
Member Rating:
A trio of Oscar nominations and a pair of Golden Globes went to this acclaimed romantic comedy-drama based on the play by Willy Russell. Julie Walters stars as Rita, a witty, 26-year-old working class British hairdresser who decides to seek an education at Open University. Rita needs a tutor, and she selects Dr. Frank Bryant (Michael Caine), an alcoholic college literature professor whose life is a shambles. Divorced, Bryant's new lover is now having an affair with his best friend and he's increasingly depressed, seeking solace in whisky. Bryant's domestic turmoil is mirrored by Rita's, as she has opted for college over motherhood, a source of friction between her and her husband. As Rita blooms intellectually under the tutelage of Bryant, she realizes that what she really lacks is self-confidence, not education, and a gentle romance blossoms between her and Bryant. At home, however, Rita's newfound self-respect and intelligence cause her even greater pain. Director Lewis Gilbert and writer Russell teamed again six years later on the similarly-themed Shirley Valentine (1989). ~ Karl Williams, Rovi

Although this film is somewhat dated, it's still a good choice and makes an entertaining evening.

I watched this movie again with a friend, who hadn't seen it. I enjoyed it just as much as before. It is a good story with tender and funny scenes. Michael Caine and Julie play their roles beautifully.

It was fun to see this movie again - Michael Caine and Julie Waters were great - even my 17 year old daughter enjoyed seeing Julie Waters in a film long before Harry Potter ever was thought of being brought to the screen

Loved this movie. Julie Walters was the cutest gal at that time. She had aged a bit by Billy Elliott but is still a sweetheart. Michael Caine was great as her slightly tipsy tutor at the OPEN UNIVERSITY.

Top notch performances by Michael Caine and Julie Walters. Story about how a teacher helps improve the life of his student and vice versa.

This movie dragged for me. The acting was good, but the plot was somewhat predictable.

I just don't get the British style of movie-making, I guess; found it very slow and plodding, and had a difficult time understanding the main female character's accent. Not worth the rent.

It's an old movie but interesting and worth a watch.
