For all its state-of-the-art special effects, Always is essentially a remake of the 1943 Spencer Tracy-Irene Dunne fantasy vehicle A Guy Named Joe--minus the wartime context. Richard Dreyfuss stars as a reckless fire-fighting pilot who is killed in what was to have been his final mission. Ascending to Heaven, Dreyfuss is introduced to businesslike angel Audrey Hepburn (playing the equivalent of the Lionel Barrymore role in A Guy Named Joe). Hepburn instructs the spectral Dreyfuss to pass on his aviation knowhow to his young successor, Brad Johnson. Our ghostly hero also smoothes the course of romance for his earthly girl friend Holly Hunter, who after several months' worth of grieving has fallen in love with Johnson. John Goodman injects a dose of comedy relief as Dreyfuss' faithful buddy. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

This one is a classic Steven Spielberg movie. Although it did not do well upon its initial release, this movie remains a classic love story and portrays the struggle of the human spirit in letting go of love and finding freedom. Good pick!

ok but not one of Steven's best. Richard Dreyfus/Holly Hunter do an admirable job but the story is so so.

It can be tough making old fashioned movies in the modern era. Some things in this movie worked for me and some didn't. Richard Dreyfus, Holly Hunter, and Audrey Hepburn were real treats in the cast. Substituting aerial firefighting for war just doesn't feel as dangerous to me and if they were going to do firefighting. There should have been more detailed about it. The relationship between Dreyfus and Hunter was probably not quite detailed enough either. The concept of what an angel would do was very appealingly done for me in this movie.

Love, love, love this movie! It's got everything - drama, adventure, comedy, and love. The characters are wonderful, and it was great to see Audrey Hepburn.

Great drama and love story drenched in Spielberg's trademark effects and cinematography . This is a chick flick even guys can enjoy with their significant others.

I loved it as much this time as I did the one with Spencer Tracy and Hepburn. Dreyfuss was the perfect actor for this role in fact I loved him more than Tracy in this role. It will appeal to my age group very much in my opinion. The director did an excellent job, but then Spielberg is a great. Definitely recommend it.
