Eddie and the Cruisers (1983) Reviews

Eddie and the Cruisers (1983)
Member Rating:
In the early 1960's, Eddie Wilson (Michael Pare) and his band The Cruisers enjoyed a brief fling with success, but their career came to a halt when Eddie's badly damaged car was discovered in an accident on a bridge. However, Eddie's body was never found, and years later, a reissue of the group's only album sparks rumors that the mysterious Eddie might still be alive. Frank Ridgeway (Tom Berenger), Eddie's former piano player and lyricist, finds himself trailed by Maggie Foley (Ellen Barkin), a reporter trying to find out the truth about Eddie, as well as another former bandmate who wants Frank to join his revamped version of the Cruisers -- and is trying to track down the tapes for the Cruisers' unreleased second album. While not a box-office success on its original release, Eddie and the Cruisers developed a following after its showings on cable television and release on videotape; this led to the belated success of the film's soundtrack album, featuring a number of bombastic neo-Springsteen numbers by John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band. Beaver Brown saxophonist Michael "Tunes" Antunes plays Wendell, the Cruisers' sax player and Eddie's best friend (despite the fact that we never hear him speak). ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Oh, come on! This movie is awesome! :-) Love the music, love the 'what happened to Eddie?' storyline. Wow. I really should add this to my 'Q' since it's been so long since I've seen it. And... you can't take this movie too seriously anyway. Loved it.

a wonderful movie, the cult following is due to the music. I can watch this movie over and over again.

The story and the plot are first class, the production value of the movie is third class. This is a really a good made for TV quality movie. If you rent a lot of movies like I do then this is Saturday afternoon fare. Worth a watch

I just watched this movie for the first time ever. My dad loves it and he told me about it a few nights ago so I rented it and I LOVE IT. Could somebody help me out a little though? My dad thought that there was a song in the movie with the line "things get a little easier once you understand", I didnt hear that in this movie. Does anybody know anything about this song?

It was very strange to hear that this film had a “cult” following, because of the very poor story, acting, and drama that it contained. There was nothing about this film that was different or innovative. I thought that with a focus to change the image and sound of the band, the director would also want to do it with the film that he was creating. This was not the case at all. Instead, it fell into clichéd plots, defined characters, and a strange aftertaste that made you wonder if you had just watched a live-action version of “Scooby-Doo”. I don’t want to give too much of the ending away (for those music fans out there), but I kept waiting for Foley to rip off the mask of the culprit as he shouts, “I would have gotten away with it too, if it wasn’t for you pesky band and your lost second album”. Alas, it never occurred, and I was forced to see Hollywood botch up another ending with darkened cars, suspicious music, and a twist that has been done time and time again.
