Earthquake (1974)
Member Rating:
Los Angeles is the natural site for a film about earthquakes: they happen there frequently, and the landscape is familiar to moviegoers from thousands of films. A huge number of ongoing vignettes which include cameos from numerous celebrities and stars are tied together by the ongoing efforts of architect Graff (Charleton Heston) to rescue his estranged spoiled-rich-girl wife (Ava Gardner), while helping out with the ongoing rescue efforts taking place around him and while trying to determine what has happened to his mistress Denise (Genvieve Bujold). The rumbling sound effect designed for this film (Sensurround) won a "Best Sound" Oscar for the film in 1975. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

While the special effects for the time period were impressive, the overall movie was disappointing. The ending stunk, particularly when there really wasn't a definitive ending. Action movies aren't always known for their acting, but the performances here by the main characters were particularly disappointing. Not worth watching

Pretty cheezey movie. Special effects were not so special; looked like the 50s. The quake was in the middle of the movie and the second half was about who/how the characters were rescuing or getting rescued (or getting dead). Problem is, the movie did nothing to make us care what the outcome for any of them might be, except the kid, and you knew he wasn't getting snuffed. I'm doing disaster movies right now, and this is among the lamest.

I like this movie... it was kinda cheesy and funny but it was good.

TERRIBLE! Thank goodness they don't make disaster movies like they used to--if they made them like this! Posieden Adventure and Towering Inferno weren't available, so I opted for Earthquake. Even the campy 70s styles and many celebrity cameos couldn't redeem it. (But I got a hearty laugh at the end when I realized this may have been the WORST movie I've ever seen!)

They just don't make disaster movies like they used to. This movie gives you time to get to know the leading characters so you can a better feeling when the disaster strikes. I have watched this movie over and over again and never get bored. I love disaster movies and if you do too, I wouldn't pass this up.

Renter beware!!!! This is not the more recent official Universal Studios DVD release, which does present the film in it's full blown SENSURROUND glory. But all in all, even without SENSURROUND, it's still great.

I don't see how this movie only got a star and a half? Whoever gave it that doesn't know a good flick, when they see one! I love the earthquake incidents with this All-Star legend Cast. I saw this movie at the Theater when it first came out and it was wonderful movie! I wonder if there will ever be a remake of this movie, with a All-Star Cast and updated special effects.

Good disaster movie. You can tell Hollywood spent some big money on this. Has many popular actors/actress.
