John Sturges directed this taut adaptation of Jack Higgins' suspense novel about an attempted kidnapping of Winston Churchill by the German high command during World War II. When it is discovered that in November 1943 Winston Churchill is scheduled to spend a weekend in a country home in Norfolk, the Germans plan to kidnap him. Heinrich Himmler (Donald Pleasence), under orders from Hitler, assigns Nazi colonel Max Radl (Robert Duvall) the chore of sneaking the English-hating Irishman Liam Devlin (Donald Sutherland) into the British countryside and arranging for a 16-man task force to be parachuted into the English country town of Sudley Constable, under the auspices of Colonel Kurt Steiner (Michael Caine). The efficient planning works too well, and before long their exactingly perfect timetable begins to come apart. ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi

This was Higgins book prior to The Eye of the Needle, and it pales in comparison. This DVD was of poor visual quality, and the movie itself seemed often funny at times, seriously detracting from the fact this was to be a suspense thriller. You have an english actor playing a german/american, and an american actor playing an irishman...and on and on.

Certainly not destined to become a clasic. Some entertaining moments, but hardly worth the price of admission. Yawn - Snore.

Worthwhile seeing, but not quite the thriller I remembered it being. It drove me crazy with the very British accents of the German characters, in particular, Michaeli Caine's COL Steiner repeated pronounciation of his right hand man Hans' name by the British accented like "Hands" and not like "Hahns!" How difficult would it be to get it right? The love affair of Molly with Liam Devlin was so precipitous as to come across as unreal. Still, it was not a waste of time to see.

A mediocre movie that could have been a classic with a little more effort.

Not bad for a WW2 good vs bad old war movie. One has to remember the movie was made in 1976 so the technology is of that timeframe.

The picture quality of this DVD is just terrible, but that is what you always get from Artisan Entertainments. Avoid their titles like the plague.

The movie was long, but evenly paced. It was a nicely written script and followed the book reasonably well. It was more of a spy/thriller than an action movie. Good cast and well directed.
