Doctor Who & The Daleks (1965)

Doctor Who & The Daleks (1965)
Member Rating:
Dr. Who was/is the longest-running entertainment series ever to run on the BBC, and for a variety of reasons, including its sassy humor, delightfully idiotic sets and special effects, and some first-class star-turns by a series of usually underrated actors in the title role, it generated a fanatic and devoted following in the U.K. One of the earliest "Doctors" in the movies was the great horror favorite Peter Cushing, and in this movie he saves the universe and, not incidentally, our dear old earth, from domination by the mostly robot and decidedly anti-biological Daleks (predecessors of the Borg, no doubt), a group of endearingly awfully designed (and made) A-frame shaped robots which, when massed together, appear to be engaged in a bumper-car race. No matter, the story races along at a furious and improbable pace, punctuated by wisecracks and gags, most of them from the almost-wise Doctor himself as he races about in his infinitely large (on the inside) antique London telephone booth known as "the Tardis" (Time And Relative Dimensions In Space), protecting the innocent. Fans of the series will be delighted with the film, but as is so often the case, newcomers to the series will wonder what all the fuss is about. The cumulative cheesiness of the whole Dr. Who concept does take quite a bit of getting used to, and any attempt to take the series or this movie seriously is doomed to failure. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

To clarify, this is not an episode of the Doctor Who television series. It is a theatrical adaptation of the first few stories from the show, that was released in the UK in the mid sixties. Here, the Doctor is played by legendary Hammer star Peter Cushing. The film itself is okay, but surprisingly, Cushing doesn't give the strong charasmatic performance that the television Doctors are known for. Basically the movie recounts, though not completely accurately, the meeting of the Doctor and his mortal enemies, the Daleks. If you're justing getting into Doctor Who, check-out something from the televsion series instead, and save this for when finished with them.

I've been a fan of Dr Who for many years. I use to watch them on channel 11 and got hooked. A great sci-fi soap and no matter how cheesy the sets, the actors and the personalities and the dialogue of the Doctor and companions always shined through. I love Cushing but his acting in this was horrible. He never came across as a genius of science and time. Never even mentioned he was a Time Lord. Just some earth scientist tinkering with an experimental tardis. His companions were a joke and he was an old foggy that should of stayed in his rocking chair sipping tea. Terrible. I was totally disappointed!!!

This is a terrible movie. Hollywood got its hands on the Doctor and created a piece of unwatchable junk. No true Doctor Who fan can sit through this movie without yelling at the screen. They actually call the Doctor "Doctor Who" to his face , like it's his name. Susan has been replaced with a small girl and the school teachers are now a 2nd granddaughter and her boyfriend. The Doctor is not even a Time Lord, but just a human!!!! the movie is a very loose and free remake of the first time the Doctor met the Daleks . I do not suggest it unless you enjoy dissecting BAD movies.
