I had read good reviews about this movie but am sad to say that was a little dissapointed after seeing it. The performances are good but the story was weak in my opinion. The plot is about an eccentric director, Rene Vidal, trying to remake an old silent classic movie, Louis Feuillade's 'Les Vampires.' Its about how a low budget, independant movie is made under the influence of a director whose movies are considered outdated for the younger French. The sqabbles, flareups, gossip and camaraderie are interesting to watch. But with all this the pace is too slow and Maggie's character hardly has any depth at all. When the central character, upon whom the movie is based, is so bland then its hard to enjoy the movie. I would recommend this only for fans of Maggie Cheung who also enjoy watching slow, indy flicks.

I feel downright churlish for not going completely crazy for this funny/sad look at movie-making -- specifically the rather absurd, doomed remaking of a real French classic, by an aging, out of style art-house director, starring Hong Kong action heroine Maggie Chung, who plays herself delightfully. I enjoyed the film; its sort of a complex 1990s Day for Night™, with a paradoxical and sometimes confusing point of view about the nature of art and the state of film. But I could not see it for the masterpiece a number of intelligent critics gave it credit for being. Good natured, well acted, and occasionally brave (but also occasionally obscure) I quite enjoyed this and it did provoke some thinking. But I could not see it as the super deep film some did.
