Female Vampire (1973)

Female Vampire (1973)
Member Rating:
This erotic vampire film from cult filmmaker Jesus Franco concerns the mute Countess Irina Karlstein (Lina Romay), who lives in the hills of Madeira and preys on passersby. Austrian novelist Baron Von Rathony (Jack Taylor) follows the Countess, knowing that she is his destiny, even if it means death. Monica Swinn, Marie-France Broquet, and Luis Barboo co-star, while Franco appears as a forensic surgeon and Jean-Pierre Bouyxou (in an outrageous beard) is featured as Dr. Orloff, Franco's blind colleague. Several different versions exist, including a horror version of 72 minutes, an 82-minute version dwelling on oral sex, and a 96-minute edit which includes both sex and horror elements as well as some hardcore inserts. Complicating matters is the fact that some scenes of vampirism were filmed twice, in graphic and traditional styles. Whatever the version, La Comtesse Noire is erotic, melancholy, and benefits from a haunting performance by Romay as the cursed vampire. ~ Robert Firsching, Rovi

Chances are, if you are considering this movie you know what you're in for. It's erotic horror, nothing more. The Female vampire doesn't drink blood, she hangs out in broad daylight, and she wears a belt without any pants to hold up. It was fun.

This film contains the most ridiculous camerawork I have ever seen. In every single shot the camera zooms into extreme fuzzy closeups and then pulls back out over and over and over. Every shot! It's crazy. I'd wished I'd popped a dramamine before watching this one. So, if zooming into Lina Romay's groceries over and over is your idea of a good time, I'd say definately check it out!

Well, it's almost hard to call the film erotic, despite having some very attractive women showing it all, the action never really makes it to excieting interaction and the scenes seem to just happen one after the other without any connection. Given that however, the film has a definite early 70's feel and I found myself actually liking it, more from a nostalgia kind of thing than for the film itself. So, it's not much of a vampire flick, no blood or gore just people climaxing themselves (men and women) to death with a very cute (usually nude) girl who wanders around silently sucking everyone she meets (not in the neck) dry! But instead of being scary sexy, even naked and writhing with the bed post, she seems almost innocent - now tell me that's not good film making!
