Cannibal Holocaust (1979)

Cannibal Holocaust (1979)
Member Rating:
While Umberto Lenzi began the Italian-made cycle of brutal Amazonian cannibal horrors with Il Paese del Sesso Selvaggio and effectively ended it with the nauseating Cannibal Ferox, it was Ruggero Deodato who directed the subgenre's most enduring film. This popular bloodbath features a fetus ripped from a woman's body, people impaled on spikes, a genuine tortoise-flaying, and numerous other indignities, both real and simulated. The plot concerns the efforts of a group of American explorers to discover the fate of a missing documentary film crew. They receive a scratchy film-reel containing the bloody truth from a tribe of tree-dwelling natives, and the reel's contents make up the bulk of the film. Advertisements claimed that "the crew who filmed it were actually devoured alive by cannibals," yet most of them were spotted alive in future unsavory gore films. While the film is undoubtedly gruesome enough to satisfy fans, its mixture of nauseating mondo animal slaughter, repulsive sexual violence, and pie-faced attempts at socially conscious moralizing make it rather distasteful morally as well. The fact that the film's sole spokesperson for the anti-exploitation perspective is played by porno star Richard Bolla should give an indication of where its sympathies lie. ~ Robert Firsching, Rovi

I was expecting a violent gorefest (and I got it), but this is easily the best film of the cannibal genre. You know what, america? All those gross things that happen on Fear Factor - this movie is like that. Those sheeps' eyes came from real sheep that were killed. Just like in this movie, except with turtles and monkeys and muskrats. Otherwise, really cool interesting horror movie that any horror fan should enjoy. If you dig Julia Roberts and Kate Hudson, though, stay away.

I cannot nor do I have the ability to describe the sheer genius of this film. This is a film of unendurable beauty of grotesque magnificence. I can't talk about it all but I'll try. Cannibal Holocaust is a cinematic masterpiece and if you're saying well hey it's just a stupid cannibal flick well it isn't. This film does what so many other films try to do so well. It combines beauty and brutality perfectly. I'll give you an example. In the scene were the documenters find the little indeo girl impaled on a long tree branch and it's the ultimate blend of the beauty of the human body and brutal violence. Deodato takes beauty in the form of the nude body of an attractive woman and rams brutal violence in the form of a 12-foot tree branch up beauties ass and out her mouth. The finished image is that of beauty with violence flowing powerfully and steadily threw it. SEE THIS FILM AND LET IT BLOW YOURE MIND!!!!!

My friend told me this was the most gore-filled movie he owned and brought it over last night. I must say that it was not exactly what I expected. I thought I would be watching a typical movie, not a documentary type movie. Most parts were definitely sick, but watching how realistic it was just about made me believe I was watching actual events. It says some parts are real, I don't know if i want to know which parts are. I didn't think there was a whole lot of cannibalism but there sure was enough disturbing rape scenes. So I gave this movie 3 stars because obviously it's not my favorite movie, but it kept my interest peaked through the whole movie.
