A family of miniature people find their existence threatened due to a forbidden friendship in this Studio Ghibli adaptation of author Mary Norton's beloved children's book The Borrowers. Headstrong and full of energy, 14-year-old Arrietty (voice of Bridgit Mendler) is just like any other adolescent girl -- except for the fact that she's only a few inches tall. Arrietty and her family are Borrowers: a race of tiny people who live among the regular-size humans undetected, and only emerge to scrounge miniscule amounts of essential living supplies from well-stocked cupboards and cabinets. Contact with the Borrowers' normal-size counterparts is strictly forbidden, but when Arrietty attempts to help her father stock up on necessities and meets 12-year-old Shawn (voice of David Henrie), the pair develop an unlikely bond. Shawn has come to live with his great aunt, and should she find out about the Borrowers, it would be disastrous for Arrietty and her family. But perhaps by working together, Shawn and Arrietty can figure out a way for the Borrowers and humans to live together in harmony. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

You want to talk about a secret world? You should see what happens to my gut on taco night. It feels like there's about 1000 little people churnin in my colon. I'm gonna get all liquored up and check this flick out. If I don't black out, I'll give it an extra star. Hopefully it has that chick in it. If anyone sees my old lady, tell her to call me, I have her check.

Two words describe it: peace and beauty. We once took our kids to a US made borrowers movie, and walked out because the children had such snotty attitudes toward their parents. This is not that movie. While the heroine does question her fathers judgement, she does so privately, shows great respect, and does not directly disobey. Every scene is played against a Japanese hand painted landscape of incredible beauty. While not CGI photo realistic, there are minute details that jump out at you - a ladybug running along a leaf, a contrasting pattern of yellow blight among the bright green leaves. While there was a conflict (the housekeeper want to exterminate the borrowers), there is no frenetic action. The virtues emphasized are quiet courage and determination in the face of danger. There is a romance between the young borrower and the young 'being. But it is necessarily platonic, as one is 5' and the other 5". This relationship explores the essence of attraction and pure friendship.

The whole adaptation of The Borrowers to Anime is seriously flawed. The Borrowers lived in England. Arrietty has red hair she and her family lives in the wainscot. They dressed in turn of the century clothes and were never imagined as anime, but real people (just tiny). This film simply does not do justice to a specifically English story (its like making Harry Potter into a Japanese story). I don't like it.
