Synopsis of Simon Boccanegra (Royal Opera House)
In 2010, opera divo Placido Domingo made headlines by forsaking his longstanding tenor vocals for his original singing voice: baritone. This was the vocal range that launched his career at the Mexican National Opera in 1959, so his return to the form marked a seminal event. The production in this release - a 2010 version of Verdi's Simon Boccanegra, by the Royal Opera House - was mounted to commemorate it. It co-stars Mariana Polavskaya, Joseph Calleja, Jonathan Summers and Ferruccio Furlanetto; Elijah Moshinsky directs; and the Orchestra and Chorus of the Royal Opera House lend symphonic accompaniment under the baton of Antonio Pappano. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi
