A husband and wife are both tempted into infidelity, but they have more in common than they'd imagine in this comedy drama from German filmmaker Tom Tykwer. Hanna (Sophie Rois) and Simon (Sebastian Schipper) are a married couple in their early forties; she's the host of a television talk show and he's an engineer. Though Hanna and Simon get along well, the spark has clearly gone out of their relationship and both find themselves casually fantasizing about other people. When Hanna meets Adam (Devid Striesow), a handsome scientist with a background in genetics, she finds herself powerfully attracted to him, and they begin having an affair. This happens as Simon is struggling with the death of his mother and the news that he has testicular cancer. After surgery returns him to health, Simon is enjoying a swim at a public pool when he meets Adam; while Simon has never been attracted to men before, something about Adam strikes a connection within him, and before long the two are involved with one another. Adam has no idea that Hanna and Simon are married, and neither Simon nor Hanna realize that their spouse is also being unfaithful, but how long can this go on before the three parties all understand what's happening? Drei (aka Three) received its North American premiere at the 2010 Toronto International Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

I was very excited and thankful to this film's director, Tom Tykwer, for surprising me again. Like the characters in his movie, as a film buff I was also getting bored with the choices available both in commercial and arthouse cinemas, until I saw "3" (a.k.a. "Drei"). I left the cinema in a state of grace after seeing this well acted, beautifully written, bold, inquisitive, provocative film, as it deals with assumptions about people's sexuality and the labels we like to give ourselves, our need to categorize behavior and sexual identity and it does it in a very thorough, honest way. It's a brave film, not afraid to go deep into its subject and to expose its characters, but whilst doing it, it's not at the same time some intellectual, cold, moral lesson. Much the opposite, if anything, it's against hypocritical false morality and standard dramas on how badly adultery can end as seen in films like "Fatal Attraction" and "Indecent Proposal." All this and it manages not to be preachy.

"Three" is a brilliant and hilarious film. It is incredibly well made, realistic, smart, upbeat, and funny. Much better than Tykwer's most famous and popular movie to date, "Run Lola Run." Great Berlin locations. No, the principal actors aren't Brad Pitt and Megan Fox - they're realistic-looking and acting characters. Yes, it has one very brief, gross scene - but it's trying to make you understand the guy's trauma and mental state! That's LIFE! Come on, we're all adults here, aren't we?

This movie is visually stunning, well-crafted, intelligent, funny, and unconventional without being too contrived. It's an art house film, so if you're looking for mindless bubble gum or popcorn, it may not be your thing. The characters are realistic and well developed; they're not impossibly beautiful, ripped, and glamorous as they would be in a Hollywood film. [Just wait for the remake!] The film examines the lives of a 40-ish couple that frees themselves from midlife malaise and finds new meaning and excitement through an affair that turns into something more - for both of them. It is the best bisexual-themed film in years, and deals with the subject in a manner that is perfectly natural and free of old-school baggage. Definitely worth a watch!
