Where to start w/ my LUV letter to C & R"! It's as if the immensely talented Ralph Bakshi ( Cool World) did a companion piece for Triplets of Belleville. Both films share a contemporary time line. Only Chico & Rita-[ with its Afro-Cuban jazz score (so cool, ice wouldn't melt in one's drink), singing so wonderful & heartfelt (must have the OST), playful & clever Caminos of entertainment Icons, a story line so powerfully tragic, so bitter/sweet yet redemptive you'll forget its factitious]- can very well stand alone! Warning: Kleenex alert for the ending! The detail to period street scenes alone will have one watching over & over again just to enjoy the backgrounds. Also, it''s so very refreshing to see facial features, body types, hair textures and skin hues woefully absent in most anime rendered in such a fluid, beautiful fashion. Be sure to check out the making of segment in the extras!
