The Pistol (1990)

The Pistol (1990)
Member Rating:
This is the biopic of basketball star Pistol Pete Maravich, here played by Adam Guier. The film is for the most part an exercise in joie de vivre, until it ends as it tragically must, with the sudden and untimely death of Maravich. Writer Darrel Campbell and director Frank Schroeder perform miracles with their tiny budget. Though Pistol is comparatively little known, odds are it won't remain that way much longer. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

I've held up Pete as an idol for his basketball skills and dedication to his craft since I was in grade school, however now I hold him up as a hero and inspiration for the way he became so transparent about his life and his trust in God. The movie itself is very good as far as the storyline of Pete and his father Press's determination to be the best. Their vision for how the game was to be played and the abilities players could develop was light years ahead of their time. The basketball moves of Pete were a bit unrealistic and slow compared to the real speed of the game. But, to me the best part was seeing the live taping of his testimony. It is so powerful that it raises my love for Pete. As a new Christian myself, I'm so amazed to see how God works in people's lives. Thank you for making this edition of the movie.

My husband and I loved this movie. It illustrates everything that's great about America, parenting, and determination. We were so happy to learn that Pete eventually found Jesus. His was a life well lived.

I really liked this movie; it was fun to see all the "moves" this kid had for playing basketball and the motivation from the encouragement his father gave him was great. This is how most of us in the older generations were raised: to be persistant and keep working for our dreams. Great inspirational movie!!
