This audacious blend of cinematic, theatrical, and operatic styles contrasts the lives and loves of Mary, Queen of Scots, and Elizabeth, Queen of England, as it blends the text of the play by Friedrich Schiller with the music from Gaetano Donizetti's opera on the same themes. This gorgeous film is a delight. The director, Petr Weigl, creates an arresting narrative by combining excerpts from the original Schiller play and the Donizetti opera. The spoken lines are in German while the sung portions, of course, are in Italian. The production is blessed by performers who look the part and can also act, neither of which is usually true of most opera singers. They are lip syncing to Sutherland, Pavarotti and Turangeau to great effect. I started out annoyed by the concept, but as the performance unfolded found myself exhilarated by the drama. In addition, the production is visually sumptuous. My congratulations to all.
