Don Giovanni (1979)
Member Rating:
Joseph Losey's 1979 film adaptation of the Mozart opera Don Giovanni adheres faithfully to the original Lorenzo Da Ponte libretto, with rakish Don Giovanni (Ruggero Raimondi) putting the make on the aristocratic Dona Anna (Edda Moser). Giovanni's enemies warn him that he'll suffer mightily for his amorous escapades. And when the gates of hell open up on cue in the last act, and Don Giovanni is dragged screaming into perdition, it turns out those enemies were right. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

OPERA LOVERS: Please rate more operas! This was my first look at what many consider the best opera ever. I was not too impressed at first. However, lovers of this opera will enjoy the video-like clip, which symbolized the story, to accompany the overture, and the beautiful indoor and outdoor cinematography. There are two schools of thought about this opera: some consider it a comedy, and others a serious morality play. This one leans heavily to the latter. In the 'Catalogue' song, a 100 foot scroll substitutes for good acting. The singing and acting are pretty good otherwise, but it's not a live, staged opera which I prefer.

Cont. p2: Nevertheless one can be at the other's service and if the match is excellent the merits of them both will be enhanced. That's what happens with this excellent movie where we can enjoy Mozart's music and the singing talents of artists like Kiri Te Kanawa besides a lot of gorgeous and dynamic movie images, sceneries, shots and superb cut and editing. The plot everyone knows: the adventures and misadventures of D. Giovanni the king of philanderers of all times and a more or less disguised attack on aristocracy and its immoral behaviour. We are on the eve of the French Revolution and as everybody also knows Mozart was a freemason and a democrat.
