This delightful opera, loosely based on the fairy tale, once had equal popularity beside William Tell and The Barber of Seville. When you rent it, You will see why. The lead calls for a coloratura contralto, a rare talent, and therefore suffered neglect for a long time. I first saw a version done at Glynebourne, and loved it. This one is even better. Ann Murray demonstrates how much range she has, as she aces the title role. It takes great liberties with "Cinderella" , but, the upside is a story that will make you wonder if it was really true. Similar theme as the "Barber", with the stepFATHER getting the same treatment that Bartolo got from the Count and Figaro. Great singing, acting, and orchestra. This one is a MUST watch!
