An entertaining and thought-provoking film. I will be thinking of this one for a few days, as it weaves many elements together in a historic story which resonates with current events. Though the synopsis paints this as a love story, the love Davus holds for his mistress is just a thread that impacts the story at several points and is crucial to the ending. During the rise of Christianity, tolerance is in short supply. At first, Christians are victims, but as they gain power, they become victimizers. Hypatia (Weisz) is the voice of reason that is never heard. It may not be historically accurate, but can anything from 2000 years ago be said to be? It is not slanted against Christians, as some reviews suggest, but against blind faith and intolerance.

A bigger budget movie than I expected. Rachel Weisz brought significant credibility to her role and the movie in general. The scenes of ancient Alexandria were well developed. Although by far not Amenabar's best film, it gives the audience something to think about.. People belived in different things throughout history, yet there are certain universal truths that remain unchanged. I agree with Jeff H's review. The morale of the story is that blind faith and intolerance maybe very damaging to human development.

Women, very important movie to watch... This movie was an EXCEPTIONAL portrayal of a factual time in our history. If you are a woman I highly recommend watching so as to see how a woman's power and insight was seen as a threat to men and hence to religion as it was run by men. This is still taught in religions today. Very powerful if you are willing to even watch this unfolding of Religion and any Belief system that shows intolerance with another's beliefs.
