Words and Music (1948)
Member Rating:
The life stories of Broadway tunesmiths Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart are prettified for the screen in MGM's Words and Music. Billed fourth, the colorless Tom Drake plays Rodgers, but never mind that: the film belongs to Mickey Rooney, as the dynamic, self-destructive Lorenz Hart. Understandably, Hart's bisexuality is downplayed. According to MGM, his biggest problem in life is that he was never satisfied with his work. We are, however, especially when those great Rodgers & Hart tunes are performed by the likes of Judy Garland, Janet Leigh, Perry Como, Lena Horne, June Allyson, Cyd Charisse, Betty Garrett, Ann Sothern, Mel Torme, Allyn McLerie, Gene Kelly and Vera-Ellen. The musical highlights include Garland's powerhouse rendition of Johnny One-Note, Kelly's Slaughter on 10th Avenue dance solo, Horne's interpretation of Where or When, Allyson's take on Thou Swell, and, best of all, Rooney's premiere performance of I'll Take Manhattan, which he allegedly had just written on the back of an automobile advertisement! ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

This movie spends far too much time on it's melodramatic and largely fictional plot and not enough on the musical numbers. As with other musicals of this sort, featuring lots of musical guest star turns, their quality veries from sublime to mediocre. Perhaps this opulent but second rate musical gets the treatmehnt it deserves from Warner Home Video; they didn't spend the money for a Technicolor restoration or provide stereo versions of the songs, as they've done with other MGM musicals. The movie looks OK, but lacks the visual clarity and gorgeous colors that would be possible. A big plus is a very informative commentary track. A unexpected gem is a Tex Avery cartoon, classic Warner Brothers style, but done at MGM.

"Words and Music" gets two thumbs up from me. The downside Too much Perry Como. I like his singing but He appears too much in the foreground in this film for being in a supporting role. Judy Garland, Hooray! Wonderful singing from the singers and great dancing from the Dancers. I applaud Rodgers and Hart for the most wonderful songs they have given us to remember them by. _TIM

I enjoyed Words & Music very much. It brought back how movies used to be entertaining. I passed it on to my sister and her husband, they agreed, movies are not made like this any longer, only murders, science fiction and horror. That is what appeals to this 21st generation. Thank goodness for CD'd. ACD
