Based on the writings and experiences of "gonzo" journalist Hunter S. Thompson, Where the Buffalo Roam details the adventures of Thompson (Bill Murray) and his attorney (Peter Boyle), whose character is rewritten as Mexican-American rather than Samoan, as they pillage and plunder their way across America on a drunken, drug-saturated mission to...well, their mission is as yet undetermined, but they set about it anyway. Highlights include a staged broadcast of the Super Bowl from Thompson's hotel room and a scene in which he escapes from the police with a little help from his trusty sidekick. ~ Jeremy Beday, Rovi

One of Bill Murray's best. If you love Hunter Thompson you'll love this take on his books. The movie is not quite Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and not quite Fear and Loathing on the campaign trail but rather a great sampler platter of Thompson's body of work. Rent it, you and your buddies will be quoting as many lines from "Where the Buffalo Roam" as you do from Murray's other extremely quotable movies. Just one great scene after another.

If you haven't read Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas and other HST books, this would be hard to fathom. Especially if you only watch it because Bill Murry is in it. At the time of its release, I was stunned at how dead-on it was. I never thought they'd capture the spirit, but they did. Murry is exceptional as Thompson, and if you catch Johnny Depp in Fear & Loathing in Vegas, you can appreciate how they both nailed Thompson.

It's a pretty fair representation of Hunter S. Thompson alright. If you're a fan, you'll enjoy the movie, but if you aren't familiar with gonzo journalism, you'll likely hate it. Bill Murray is a much better Thompson than Johnny Depp was in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.
