Let's admit it: we all started watching this series because of all the publicity it garnered for its graphic sex scenes. While nudity-seekers surely won't be disappointed, these scenes slowly wane as the characters themselves, not their genitalia, become the focus of this engrossing and bluntly written examination of monogamy. Be prepared to be bored at the beginning: in our soap opera-infested TV world it's difficult to accept that you're watching a relationship drama where no one is bed-hopping or sleeping with their secretary. Any flirtations with the melodramatic are subtle as is basically every other aspect of "Tell Me You Love Me" from the set design to the music to the acting to the opening credits (there are none!). HBO delves into uncharted genre territory for the network but, like always, gives you something you've never seen before on broadcast or basic cable television.

This show might be one of the most underrated shows on TV considering it comes from the same network as The Sopranos, The Wire, Six Feet Under, and Entourage. But it is superbly acted, well written and very true-to-life. There are periods of silence when the couples talk to each other, and that's the point. That's what real couples do. Most real couples aren't actors and the stars of this show make it seem more like they are being real rather than acting. There isn't any silly porno-style music, which is nice considering how sexually graphic the show is. If you haven't seen this show, it is a must watch.

I spent most of the first episode giggling at the over-the-top sex scenes, but sometime during the second episode, i began to appreciate the seriousness of the plot, the characters' problems and the well written script. The sex gets old, but the story gets deeper with each episode. Like all HBO shows this, too, is addictive.
