Taking inspiration from Saint Columcille, a nine year-old boy recently diagnosed with a terminal illness sets out to locate God before the all-powerful deity finds him first. With nothing more than a ramshackle boat with neither sail nor oars to propel him, young Seamus soon comes into contact with compassionate strangers James and Darry. At first it seems as if Seamus and his fellow travelers share little in common, though as the quest continues it gradually becomes apparent that they are just as much in need of healing as the ailing young adventurer himself. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

A very well-made movie, with exceptional performances by the two children actors. The problem is, it is a very, very dark movie, with a meaningless, sad ending. The Christ-motif plays strongly throughout the whole movie and storyline, but there isn't so much as a hint of any redemptive aspect--and most movies with a Christ-figure in them tries to include some aspect that acknowledges the primary reason (according to the Bible, at least) that Christ came. I'm not asking for a religeous movie, it's just that the inconsistencies and overall morbid nature of this one didn't compliment the fine acting at all. Don't rent it if you want a movie that ends well. Rent it if you want to see yet another example of the meaninglessness and painful nature of life.

Just got done watching this movie and I had high hopes for it in the beginning, but it just kept going downhill and then ended very bizarre! I would not recommend wasting the time watching this one.

A bleak story involving a dying boy, a grieving youth and a disgruntled terrorist. While Catholicism is thematically prevalent in this film, it would appear that the writer's intent was to rebuke faith. The story is woven around a dying child's interpretation of a Biblical verse and the belief that Jesus can intercede in our earthly fates. The director weaves a rather jumbled web while attempting to illustrate how serendipity can be rationalized as acts devine. Strangely, in the closing scenes the film reverses its pervasive religious cynicism and settles for spiritual ambiguity. The film itself is a 2 star affair, but the actors adopted their roles well enough to earn a 3rd star. this is not a family film.
