A psychotic ex-policeman with a mysterious supernatural gift proves invaluable in the case of a missing police firearm and its vanished owner in this tense police thriller from co-directors Johnny To (Fulltime Killer) and Wai Ka-fai (Running on Karma). Bun is an outcast detective who always seems to crack the case despite having some rather serious personality flaws. When Bun slices off his ear and offers it up as a gift at a party staged to honor one of his superiors, he is promptly forced into early retirement. Subsequently withdrawn into his own world and tormented by the specters of his former vocation, Bun finds his unique ability to see the hidden personalities and inner demons of everyone he meets nearly driving him to insanity. As a policeman Bun's gift of second sight helped him to solve some of the department's most difficult cases, but now that the visions serve no purpose, they simply serve to erode his already fragile sense of reality. Yet despite Bun's bad reputation, ambitious inspector Ho (Andy On) still believes in him. Recently, Ho has been assigned the difficult case of a locating a missing policeman named Wong (Lee Kwok Lun), who disappeared after pursuing some suspects into the nearby mountains. While Bun is indeed eager to help out with the case, he soon finds his volatile personality clashing with the seven conflicting personalities of Wong's apparently schizophrenic partner Chi-wai (Lam Ka-tung). ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

This is Madness - simply brilliant madness!! If I may say, it is probably one of the most creative and craziest and riskest (in terms of money) hk films that I have seen. it's definitely "out there"! But then, it is also one of the smartest and deepest drama made in hk cinema. It's like Monk (us tv series) on drug plus the "eyes"! By the way, how can the description forgets to mention the pretty Kelly Lin!! Besides the wooden (and annoying and can't act) Andy On, almost every actor / actress have given great performance, especially Lau Ching Wan who has provided an Oscar worthy, while this is first time that I notice Kelly Lin is indeed an actress - more than simply being a pretty girl.

After reading the bad reviews, I felt compelled to return this film without watching it! But, I kept it,, and I'm glad I did. I gotta say, I'm a big fan of Asian cinema, that said. This movie is a brilliant detective story, that is too complicated to event try to explain. But seriously, if you enjoy good foreign films, with subtitles,, give "MAD DETECTIVE" a shot. You'll be pleasantly surprised at how good it is... definitely a film for a thinking person. Enjoy!

Well done, this could have been a superb movie. I hope someone grabs ahold of it and remakes it.This one too confusing, not supportive of main character. Rats.
