Member Rating:
In this theatrically released chapter of the 1984-1987 syndicated animated series, the struggle between the heroic Autobots and evil Decepticons is taken twenty years into the future as both sides must deal with a world-devouring being called Unicron (voiced by Orson Welles). Set in 2005, The Transformers: The Movie serves as a bridge between the series' second and third seasons, with the deaths of several major characters and the introduction of new ones. Darker and more action-packed than the TV series, the movie was originally dismissed as little more than a feature-length toy commercial, but it has since grown in stature to become a cult favorite. ~ Skyler Miller, Rovi

Maybe it's because I watched the TV shows in the afternoons (after school...) or maybe it's because I played with the toys (I worked at a Toys R Us) but I have always found the original Transformers just plain old fun. The movie was just a vehicle to introduce all new characters to the mix and fills out some background that the TV show never really went into. Is it great cinema - Not really; Despite the fact that the animation is light years beyond the TV show (someone said it was done by the same studios that did Heavy Metal-but I don't know if that's true) it does have some very "Heavy-Metalish" graphics work in it. Is it worth a rental - Definitely; If for no other reason than to harken back to the days when the neatest things were cars that turned into robots, Jolly Ranchers candies, Genesis videos on MTV and Reagan taking Khadafi down a few notches.

I grew up watching transformers the series. I'm a big movie fan and I have to admit this movie made me grow up in a big way. Without giving anything away, I can't honestly say I would let a kid watch it because of the elements of life and death. I know it doesn't seem that bad now a days but back then I practically thought these robots were invincible. It showed me that not all movies turn out the way you want them to. But that doesn't make it a bad thing. It's just part of growing up.
