Lucio Silla
Synopsis of Lucio Silla
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart first staged his lesser-known opera Lucio Silla in 1772, with a libretto by Giovanni de Gamerra. The work dramatizes the plight of the titular Roman dictator, who feels an insatiable erotic desire for Junia, the daughter of his arch-nemesis Marius. He runs head-first into romantic conflict given Junia's competing love for Caecilius, a Roman senator in exile. This home video release constitutes a film of a stage production of Lucio Silla, mounted by Jürgen Flimm at the Teatro La Fenice. Roberto Saccà, Annick Massis, Monica Bacelli, Veronica Cangemi and Julia Kleiter co-star; the orchestra and chorus of the Teatro La Fenice, under the baton of Tomáš Netopil, provide musical accompaniment. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi
