This is an adaptation of a manga/anime series known as Sukeban Deka (Delinquent Girl Detective) - I believe there was also a tv series and a 1988 movie. As for this movie, don't let the statement "non-stop action" on the movie cover fool you. Going into it I was expecting the cheese factor to be higher than normal but thought maybe it'd be entertaining. This movie makes the mistake of taking itself too seriously. There is a group operating out of a school that makes students blow themselves up (commit suicide) and they have planned "somthing big" in 72 hours. Asamiya is picked up from New York and brought to Japan to save the day! Nothing in this movie makes sense....it just goes along pretending that it will build up to something. Forget the plot it does not even deliver on the action front - the "yo-yo" is only used 5-6 times in the whole movie, and that also in no sensational way. In the end the movie disappoints, so please save yourself the time by avoiding it.

There's so much to like about this movie. The cool James Bond type opening credits, the directing, the editing, the special effects, the sound, the action sequences, Saki Asamiya's costumes and so on. There hasn't been a cooler female, action movie since "So Close". While the notion of a secret agent with a yo-yo as their only weapon doing undercover work in a high school seems campy, remember ... it's a movie. The only notable negative was the casting for the Detective Kira and the American, female CIA operative characters - their acting performances were "Acting 101" bad. Even the picture quality had excellent color and high resolution. The 5.1 audio option provided one of the best uses of surround sound I've heard in a long time. As for extras, there's a theatrical trailer for the movie, a "Making Of: Yo-Yo Girl Mission" feature (41:32 min), trailers for four other movies and oddly, a commercial for HDNet television programming. Definitely recommended.

Don't watch this movie expecting it to win an award! Watch this movie for the cute jpop girls (Ayaya, v-u-den), some asian style emotion, and an unrealistic plot (a teen girl gets recruited by the government, is given a yo-yo weapon, and is expected to uncover a terroristic plot)! Let me reiterate: do not watch this if you expect a cheese-fest of mindless non-stop action that is typical of a lot of American movies out nowadays. This is the fourth in a series of Sekeban Deka titles that date back to the 80's. There is a backstory that watchers may not get- the heroine of this movie is the daughter of the heroine character from the first series. The Asamiya Saki name is an operative's code name- the code name also given to her mother when she was a delinquent teenager. BTW, the American title is such a crapshot. The direct translation should be "Delinquent Girl Detective, code name: Asamiya Saki" One more thing, that battlesuit.. niiice!
