The Road to San Diego (2006)
Member Rating:
When a decidedly average Argentinean football (read: soccer) fan hears that his favorite player has been hospitalized with cardiac problems, his quest to present his idol with a piece of wood that bears an uncanny resemblance to the star athlete becomes the focus of director Carlos Sorin's lighthearted road movie. Tati Benitez (Ignacio Benitez) is a lumberjack who has recently been laid off, and these days the industrious but unemployed football fan makes his living by collecting pieces of wood for a nearby artisan. A die-hard eccentric who became obsessed with Diego Armando Maradona when the Argentinean international was with Boca Juniors, Benitez knows every statistic of Maradona's impressive career by heart -- as well as a formidable amount of personal information. When Benitez's friends inform that Maradona is suffering heart problems, he soon sets out on a pilgrimage to deliver a most unusual piece of wood to the man. Whether traveling by foot, by bus, or even ambulance, Benitez will stop at nothing to let his favorite player feel firsthand the dedication and love of his loyal fan base. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi
