Lars von Trier's black comedy The Boss of It All (Direktøren for Det Hele) concerns an IT company owner who -- in need of a figurehead to "hide behind" when confronted with employee problems -- invented the personage of a CEO during the startup period for his corporation. The scheme worked for a surprisingly long period, but when the time arrives to sell the business, massive problems arise -- for the prospective buyers insist on only negotiating with the CEO, in person. Thus, the owner further extends the ruse, by hiring a down-and-out actor to impersonate the chief officer. With Direktøren for Det Hele, von Trier uses a new means of filmmaking for this film: Automavision, whereby filming is done with an "automatic randomized camera" that selects the shots. It became a means for Von Trier to "clean up" his approach to directorial work and reconnect with his own love of filmmaking. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

Lars von Trier tries his hand at comedy -- and a heavy hand it is! Presented in the mock documentary style of TV's infinitely superior "The Office," the film's promising premise (see synopsis above) just lies there and dies. As an alternative, I recommend the wonderful (if bizarre) Danish "black comedy" "Adam's Apples." [Subtitles.]

With Boss of it All Mr. Von Trier does not cater to idiots who would sue him for the difficulty of reading subtitles. He is one of those few film makers sitting at the forefront of cinema and pushing its boundaries to keep it from becoming a drive-thru product served with fries and pop. While The Boss of it All might not be his best work, Mr. Von Trier should be commended for experimenting with "automavision" (unpredictable computerized camera movements, that keep the actors in a continuous state of improvisation) and a Renaissance type farce - with monologues, background narrator, plot twists, and all. The result is a pleasant performing freshness much in the line of commedia dell'arte, proving that gratuitous special effects should never replace good film making. Lars von Trier is a true thinker and a pure artist and his groundbreaking body of work keeps unsullied the frontiers of cinema. Therefore, gladly I volunteer to become his guinea pig of it all.

It's amazing how most Americans are incapable of reading subtitles while still able to string words together for a review.
