The Serial (1980)

The Serial (1980)
Member Rating:
There are no cliff-hanging moments in Serial, but there's plenty of laughs in this trenchant comedy comment on 1970s lifestyles. Martin Mull plays the father of a Marin County family that succumbs to every silly fad coming down the pike. Mull tries to distance himself from his family's idiocies, but it's always the man who pays the piper. The film, based on a collection of newspaper essays by Cyra McFadden, is neatly tied up with a Capraesque ending allowing Mull to finally prevail. Some of the best moments involves Mull's tiltings with his trend-happy neighbor Bill Macy. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

This is a "fun" movie. If you are looking for anything "deep" forget it. "New ageism" cults, free love (aka sex), drugs, gay motorcycle gangs, psycho babble and EST (Erhard Seminars Training) are among the many things this movie pokes fun at. Harvey (Martin Mull) and Sam (Bill Macy) at times seem to be the only sane people in this insane society. If you are easily offended don't watch this movie. If not prepare for a fun time.

What I loved about this movie is how it sends up all the crazy fads and stupid things we do. What makes it especially poignant is that while this movie addresses the fads of the 60's, and 70's, you could easily do a remake today. Man, why can't I find this movie anywhere anymore?
