A farmer's family emigrates from Sicily to America. This arduous journey, from a mountaintop near their home to the halls of Ellis Island, is filled with stark and beautiful images. Like my own ancestors did, the family travels here in the bowels of their ship, where conditions are grim. No plot twists and turns per se, but the acting is superb. Charlotte Gainsbourg gives the movie a flavor of mystery, as everyone wonders about this single Englishwoman who shares cramped quarters with them. I loved this movie, as it gave me an excellent vision of what my family went through to get here.

This is the immigrant's story of getting to America. The family is from a very poor, very isolated village cut off from the modern world. The plot is simple, this is more about the feeling of being immigrants than it is about one family's story. The film is beautifully shot. The journey is mystifying and frightening. The humble characters are heroic as they reach the gates of what is for them truly a new world.

The story was enlightening for those of us who do not have "immigrant stories" from our older relatives. The pacing of the movie was deadening - slow, even, little variety.
