Set in the 1936 present, the film offers a wonderful blend of Western Hero and Dust Bowl issues, including Gene's radical take on the value, power, and pitfalls of labor's collective energy. The men sing, "We love our forman and our forman loves us! What else will you expect? But some dark night, when things are right, we'll get it in the neck!" Organized corruption loses, including a banker, and populism wins. Notice the two haunting faces of Dust Bowl women with their men on the final victory ride of the work train, now pulled by horses.
