Romeo and Juliet Get Married (2005)
Member Rating:
Shakespeare-style storytelling meets soccer fan sensibilities in this tale of two Brazilian sweethearts whose families root for rival teams, and the lengths the pair go to in order to keep their love alive. While Romeo and his family are ardent supporters of the Corinthians, Juliet father is the biggest Palmeira fan on the planet. Now, if Romeo can just suppress his urge to root for the Corinthians and convince Juliet's father that he'll be a suitable son-in-law, perhaps these two families will be able to put their bitter rivalry aside long enough to cheer on the committed young couple when their wedding date rolls around. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

I wasn't aware that this was a foreign film with subtitles but it didn't take away from the movie at all. It was a sweet romance and has a happy ending unlike Shakespear's original version. My daugher (13 years old), who plays soccer, enjoyed it as well.

Surprisingly good, light fare. It's Shakespeare's R&J with the feuding families being rival soccer team fanatics. It works. It turns the classic tragic love story into a dramedy since, ultimately "it's only a game", which is, of course, another profound theme in itself. The lead actress is very easy to watch; she's beautiful but with a girl-next-door quality. This film shows Brazilian soccer as a quasi-religious obsession for the masses, but does so with a light touch. In addition, it's a nice little window into the very cosmopolitan Sao Paulo life.
