Originally created for (and telecast on) Nickelodeon, the half-hour anime series Avatar: The Last Airbender is set in an alternate world in which the "nations" are divided along the lines of elements: the Water Nation, the Earth Nation, the Fire Nation, and the Air Nation. The titular Avatar was supreme master of the four elements and was predestined to protect the rest of his world against the evil Fire Nation. Abruptly disappearing from view, the Avatar resurfaced in the form of 12-year-old Aang, the last of the Airbender tribe. Discovered frozen in ice near the South Pole by two young members of the Water tribe, Katara and Sokka, the irresponsible Aang had to summon up enough strength -- and self-esteem -- to do battle against the villainous Firebenders. The series' requisite "cute little animal" was Aang's pet lemur, Momo. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

This is a great show for young viewers or adults like myself. The young characters of the show are so endearing and the challenges & people they face help them grow. I find that every episode gets better and better. I hope they eventually get to the closure of the show, so that we can see the young Avatar re-unite all the nations. Family safe, highly recommended for the entire family, 5 and Up of course.

'Avatar' is a series first intended for young children, but I find that it's touching for any age, throughout the series the characters develop, and its plotline follows many twists and turns. The artwork is beautiful and the animation is fluid, and the plotline and background are well-researched and very symbolic and traditional. 'Avatar's bending disciplines are based on real martial arts, and its plot is serious, but it doesn't worry about stopping for a wonderfully comical break, right when it's needed.

This is definately a cartoon series worth watching, for kids and families. Avatar is cute, funny, original, and very entertaining. Child safe while at the same time fun to watch for teens and adults (specially in a family group). Rent it. Then buy it if you think the same.
