Heavy metal might be regarded as the High School Shop Class of rock & roll -- there's a lot going on there, but most folks don't credit the participants with being either very smart or terribly ambitious. Not everyone feels that way, though, and filmmaker, anthropologist, and heavy metal enthusiast Sam Dunn offers an insider's look at the music and subculture of metal with this documentary, created in collaboration with filmmakers Scot McFadyen and Jessica Joy Wise. Metal: A Headbanger's Journey examines the history of hard rock's extreme wing, offers a look at the various subsections within the heavy metal pantheon (from innocuous hair metal bands such as Poison and Warrant to the homicidal lunatic fringe of Norwegian black metal); examines the sociology of metal in terms of class, race, gender and economics; celebrates the music with a nod toward its underestimated intelligence as well as its physical power; and allows members of such landmark bands as Black Sabbath, Slayer, Motörhead, Iron Maiden, White Zombie to speak for themselves about their work. Metal: A Headbanger's Journey received a fist-pumpingly enthusiastic reception for its premiere screenings at the 2005 Toronto Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

A great documentary for both those that love metal, and those that want to know why so many listen to it. I found myself watching it and asking, "I wonder if he'll [Sam Dunn] talk about...", only to find that 3 minutes later he confronted the issue!

I have to admit, I thoroughly enjoyed this documentary, but there's too much metal and this piece of work only scratches the surface. It's not perfect by any means, but as far as whats currently out there (in the English language), it's about the best even though it's FAR too short. Also, where's Scott Ian from Anthrax?! He does these things all of the time! I have to admit, I'm somewhat jealous of Sam Dunn at times with going to Wacken and meeting some of the people that he'd met. (Tony Iommi!! Dio!!) Rent it or buy it, then check out Talking Metal on Fuse - or download the podcast - to get your Metal fix!

This was a great movie for those who enjoy hard rock music. I especially loved all the Dee Snider in the video he was great. Slayer Rocked as well! Great explaination of the history of rock from one man's prospective, tho I wanted more, this could have been a 3-5 disc series chronoligically aout the history of rock. I still wanted more at the end, so I'll be searching around for more rock videos like this!
