This traditional production from the Der Wiener Staatsoper is thouroughly enjoyable. Everything works. The overall design is excellent. The cast is first rate. Domingo as Chenier is in exceptional voice. Gabriele Benackova-cap as Madeleine is affecting and credible. Her rendition of "La mama, morta" is particulary arresting. Piero Cappcuuilli as Gerard seems to define the role. Bravo!

I thoroughly enjoyed everything about this performance. Placido Domingo's arias stop the show numerous times. The magnificent Vienna Opera House is the perfect venue. If you want to own a DVD of this opera, I'd vote for this one.
