Planet of the Vampires (1965)

Planet of the Vampires (1965)
Member Rating:
This classic blend of science-fiction and horror belies its extremely low budget with buckets of atmosphere and some genuinely creepy setpieces. The story concerns the crews of two spaceships, who land on a foggy, seemingly deserted planet. What they don't know is that the planet was home to a race of vampiric aliens, who possess their minds, eventually rising from their strange, misty graves to seek human blood. Legendary director Mario Bava once again proves himself a master at atmospheric composition, using color, sound, and minimalistic sets in original and unnerving ways. Barry Sullivan stars with Angel Aranda and Brazilian actress Norma Bengell. The American version, running several minutes shorter than the original, was put together by Ib Melchior (The Angry Red Planet). ~ Robert Firsching, Rovi

I actually liked this movie more than I thought I would. I wanted something off the beaten path. Something different. It was very low budget and a nice plot twist at the end - several at once actually. The title is misleading though since they are not Vampires - at least given the current understanding of the term.

I have stumbled upon the movies of Mario Bava and enjoy his horror movies. This one was good and bad. The colors, lighting, and sets were great. The uniforms were questionable especially with that high pointy collar! But the title was misleading if you were expecting neck biting and blood drinking. I enjoy Bava's gothic horror movies better than this sci-fi movie but over all it was a good rental.

You've gotta love American International movies (Pit and the Pendulum, Masque of the red death) they always find a way to make the film look like it costs more than it really did. The colors and sets and costumes are always so vibrant. Although not enough to save this film. I believe this was filmed at Cinecite in Italy . . . kind of a spagetti sci-fi. Not much suspense, horrible dialog (I think half the actors were dubbed in english). Rent this only if you are really in the mood for some 60's cheese or are really a fan of American International films.
