ANTS IN THE MOUTH offers a gripping time and locations (the 1950s: Barcelona under the Franco regime, Cuba on the eve of Castro's revolution); crackerjack sets, costumes and cinematography; a fine cast and a story that promises much. When the delivery finally arrives you are likely to feel cheated because--as much love, betrayal, revenge and politics as have been cooked up--the meal is pedestrian rather than gourmet, even though it is served with some style. For the movie's look and its cast, I'm glad I saw it, disappointing as is the outcome. There must have more to the original novel that what finally made it to the screen.
