Turkish music is not written in time keys western ears are accustomed to. The time signature is 5/9ths often, giving it a distinctive sound sometimes associated with Persian tunes. The exoticness of this rythym is applied by various artists, punk rockers, rappers, and pop stars and the result is a fascinating glimpse into a culture that seems to be driven with expressing a love of place/home -- Istanbul. With heavy use of sacrosanct imagery, much of the music expresses an "us-versus-them" conceit, with "them" being the western music industry. I suppose in the end I wish I'd seen more of Istanbul, particularly the historical sections, but I'd say overall Crossing the Bridge is a soulful documentary and well worth watching, particularly for anyone who thinks about or composes music.

Fatih Akin shows yet another side of his amazing talent. Sandwiched between his two brilliant dramas 'Head On', and 'Edge of Heaven', this is a fun, infectious documentary on the Turkish music scene – from rock and roll to traditional music and everything in between. Done with flair, filled with a tremendous sense of humor, great characters and amazing music. Even if you're not normally drawn to 'world music' it will be hard not to enjoy this sweet spirited tribute to all the wide ranging music and performers in Turkey's multi-cultural scene.
