Genesis (2004)
Member Rating:
The cycle of life of a handful of different animals is captured on film in a whole new way in this documentary. Using special motion-control photography equipment, Genesis allows filmgoers to view animal behaviors which are too small, too slow, or too difficult to normally be seen with the naked eye, including a chick hatching its way out from inside an egg, jellyfish drying into nothing under the heat of the sun, or a snake slowly swallowing prey bigger than itself. This footage is accompanied by narration from Sotigui Kouyaté, who uses simple props and easily understandable analogies to explain the science behind what its shown on screen. Genesis was directed by Claude Nuridsany and Marie Perennou, who previously created another acclaimed scientific documentary, Microcosmos. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

This film is not for the science-savy. It's all basic science, not much more info than you'd learn in a basic science class. It presents all the information with plenty of interesting imagry, and some scientists explaining it. It gets a little slow at times, but if you're just getting interensted in science it's worth watching.

The movie has beautiful photography but the tone of the narration is mystical as opposed to scientific. There are many opportunities for explanation in this movie that are simply not taken. For instance, in the beginning of the movie the narrator speaks of how the planet was formed. He moves from the life of water creatures to a fully developed landmass... no mention of how the plants and trees developed there. The narration is severely lacking. The movie shows the entire mating rituals of several animals yet does not explain those rituals. When the animals are battling for dominance there is no narration of the strategy taken to win. While the movie is visually entertaining, it could be much more educational and intellectually stimulating.

I had high hopes for this film, but I was truly disappointed in it. It was very slow and downright boring. It just seemed to drag on and on and on. I really enjoyed the documentary Deep Blue and was hoping for something similar with this one, but it was not to be. Genesis seemed more like a "5th grade science film"...you know the ones that caused you to go to sleep in class (but at least you got out of listening to a teacher's lecture for the day).
