One man demonstrates how to get rich selling warring nations the tools of their deadly trade in this dark comedy drama. Yuri Orlov (Nicolas Cage) is an opportunistic businessman who stumbled into a gold mine after the end of the Cold War and the collapse of the Soviet Union. Huge caches of Soviet weapons became available at bargain prices (and even for free if one wasn't above stealing), and as literally billions of dollars' worth of Soviet military technology disappeared, it began finding its way into the hands of weapons dealers eager to sell it to the highest bidder. Orlov was one such dealer who found plenty of buyers for guns and military gear in unstable Third World nations, who paid cash and didn't appreciate too many questions. Orlov's exploits in the arms business quickly made him a very rich man, but they've also led to some unwanted attention from Jack Valentine (Ethan Hawke), an Interpol agent who is convinced Orlov isn't playing by the rules. Inspired by a true story, Lord of War also features Jared Leto, Ian Holm, Bridget Moynahan, and Donald Sutherland. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

This movie was well acted, well though out, well written, well... everything. It was not what I expected. It was not your stupid action movie where the hero gets shot by 15 men with machine guns and doesn't even get a scratch. This is a real life movie about gun running and drug addiction and the treacherous life that is. It's getting absorbed by money and status and forgetting who you are. And it's based on actual facts. The US as a whole is one of the biggest gun runners in the world.

One of the best movies I've seen in a long time. If you like films like "Blow" or "Michael Clayton" and appreciate that morality is usually gray and not just black/white, then you'll love this movie. Most of the negative criticism on here seems to be from people accusing the film of a liberal agenda, or of being "boring", but it's neither. It merely portrays facts occurring during both Democrat & Republican administrations and exposes the moral questions associated with arms trafficking (and really, any commercial industry), without being too preachy. Think of it as "Blow" with guns instead of cocaine. Great movie.

A bit on the violent side and believable story. It had it all, Romance, drugs, corrupt government, betrayal, love of money, death of a friend. 5 star movie, but I love anything Cage stars in.
