Just this year I have seen 6 different versions of "The Nutcracker" ballets but I found myself looking THIS one up online because it is STILL the very best I have ever seen. Baryshnikov is the best of the best still today. I have not seen a stronger male ballet dancer. After seeing this one as a child I have never found another that measures up to this one! The choreography, costumes and concept is amazing and Gelsey Kirkland was the best Clara, a perfect match for Baryshnikov! It is timeless.

This rendition of "The Nutcracker" reset the gold standard for all ballet productions since. It also made Baryshnikov a household name. The choreography is brilliantly precise, the costumes are perfect for this ballet based on a fairy tale, and Barry's skill and proficiency is at its peak. And to those who think that male ballet dancers aren't "manly": Baryshnikov's multiple children (e.g., with Jessica Lange, among others) are testimony to the contrary.

Although I like professional football and macho western movies, I guess this ballet production was pretty good - - for a dancing dude in tights ! The girl was pretty - - but must admit, watching all these dudes prancing around like Tinker Bell is a bit...."interesting"...I'm guessing 99% of the guys in this show probably don't care too much for females, in general, when away from this Nutcracker set and ballet production...
