One of the Third Reich's sinister plans for training a legion of strong and obedient young men to do their bidding is exposed in this historical drama, inspired by true-life events. In 1942, Friedrich Weimer (Max Riemelt) is a 16-year-old amateur fighter who is spotted while working out at a boxing club by Heinrich Vogler (Devid Striesow). Vogler is a recruiter for the National-Political Institutes of Learning (called "NAPOLA" for short), where promising young men with various talents will be taught to hone their strength, cunning, and fearlessness to a fine point, with the ultimate goal of using NAPOLA graduates to help rule the territories Nazis will overtake once they've won the war. Vogler invites Weimer to join the NAPOLA training facility in Allenstein, and he accepts, despite the strong misgivings of his family. Weimer is at first enthusiastic and committed to his new regimen, and becomes friendly with a fellow student, Albrecht Stein (Tom Schilling), an aspiring writer whose father, a important man in the German military, would like to see him join the SS. Stein does not embrace the training with the same enthusiasm as many of his fellows, and in time he and Weimer develop feelings for one another that go beyond friendship. In time, Weimer begins to lose his enthusiasm for NAPOLA, especially after a mission to find escaped Russian prisoners leads to the death of unarmed teenagers, and he looks for a way to rebel against the repressive system. Filmmaker Dennis Gansel dedicated Before the Fall to his grandfather, Peter Fritz Gansel, a NAPOLA veteran whose stories of the school's brutality inspired the movie. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Sixty years after the war filmmakers in Germany can more readily chronicle the Third Reich. Here we have an elite and prestigious school for young men--uniforms, training with live weapons, strict rules of behavior and conduct. We have several archetypes: the sensitive son of an ardent and ruthless military officer--the boy is destined to disappoint and fail, the working class boy who sees this school and his boxing prowess as his big chance, the cruel, sly, manipulative one who derives great pleasure from the power he wields, and others. Young filmmaker, talented young actors, beautiful photography. The movie's journey was rather predictable because the characters, although interesting and well acted, were stereotypes. Don't know if I will see it again, but liked it a lot one time around.

Consistently engrossing without always attaining believability or the riveting attention one would expect (considering its subject matter), BEFORE THE FALL explores the "Napola," the elite Nazi schools for training "political" youth during World War II. We observe it all through the eyes of a talented, blond boxing whiz (who seems to have trouble following-through with his knock-out punches). His family is anti-Nazi, but he sees his main chance & goes for it--entering the school, making friends and observing teachers, students, trainers & administrators. While the "Napola" has not been much explored via the entertainment realm, the film uncovers little that's different from what we might expect--except for its look at what may have passed for "protest" during those terrible times. How did German youth cope with this "training," including the betrayal of friends, family & their own best selves? "Before the Fall"--worth seeing, but tap down any major expectations--gives us some clues.

Excellent, polished acting and filming. An intense depiction of how even adolescents must make ethical, long effecting choices under peer, parental and societal pressures which are not always ethical or in their best interest. I also reiterate what another reviewer expressed: the synopsis is incorrect in saying that the feelings between the two main characters develops "beyond friendship"(I have also seen this movie in the LGBT section of local video stores). Although there would have been nothing wrong with this development, it just doesn't happen unless the viewer suspects or imagines it beyond what is depicted in the film. I sensed a strong yin and yang bond between the two young men, but did not feel there was a romantic or sexual attraction developed in the film, even when they end up emotionally clasping each other on the ground after they had been fighting. Their relationship reminded me of the one depicted in "Au Revoir Les Enfants" by Louis Malle.
