Night of the Living Dead (1990)

Night of the Living Dead (1990)
Member Rating:
Makeup wizard Tom Savini's color remake of George A. Romero's 1968 classic follows the original almost shot-for-shot, so quality comparisons are somewhat pointless. The film was clearly made for younger viewers who refuse to watch black-and-white films, no matter how good they may be. The result is passable, but the very fact that the original was made 22 years before makes this version seem almost dated in its restraint. By the time of its release, Romero had already geometrically raised the gore quotient with Dawn of the Dead (1978) and Day of the Dead (1985), so Savini's starting back at square one further lessened the impact of this pointless retread. If this version has anything to offer, it is Patricia Tallman's engaging lead performance as a gun-toting independent woman, one of this film's few elements not lifted wholesale from Romero. ~ Robert Firsching, Rovi

The acting is first rate and the character played by Patricia Tallman is absolutely fantastic. This movie will not only please horror fans but anyone who likes a movie with great acting. Thanks for a great movie.

George Romero is a hero of mine. I love the classic version of this film. It's a masterpiece in its own right. This remake equals the original in every respect, and when it comes to Barbara, it surpasses it. The photography is vastly improved and the music is much more effective. Each character is faithful to the original except for Barbara, and the changes brought about in her are refreshing. She starts out as the crying damsel in distress, but she takes Ben's speech to heart and grows. Happily, she survives this time. I also liked the change in Ben's death. Instead of being tragically mistaken for a zombie, he does become a zombie and is killed. Barbara, then, delivers final justice to Cooper in a swerve from the original ending. Overall this is definitely worth a rental, and if you're a Romero fan, it's worth picking up for your collection. The social commentary is a bit more relevant today. A faithful update that surpasses the original in some aspects.

A remake where the zombies move as slow as in the original but the terror is still felt as this group of survivors try to last the night. Trapped in a farmehouse and unsure if they can get to help before the zombies overcome them, the group of 7 survivors realize that the zombies aren't their biggest threat. If only all remakes of the Romero zombie movies could be this true to the story and this terrorfying
